Meet Me at the Bridge

Meet Me at the Bridge is a mentorship and community engagement initiative led by the Omega Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in partnership with the Alabama Statewide Organization (ASO) and the ASO Fatherhood and Mentoring Committee, during Selma’s annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

The program brings together youth, mentors, community leaders, and fraternity brothers to walk across the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge as a symbol of unity, leadership, and continued commitment to justice. Designed especially for young men and mentees, the experience connects the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement in Selma with the responsibility of preparing the next generation of leaders.

Through Meet Me at the Bridge, participants engage in mentorship, reflection, and fellowship while honoring Selma’s enduring role in the fight for equality and civic engagement.

The History

Selma, Alabama holds a sacred place in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1965, the struggle for voting rights reached a defining moment when hundreds of peaceful demonstrators attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery in protest of the systematic denial of voting rights for Black citizens across the South.

On March 7, 1965, a day that would become known as Bloody Sunday, marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge and were violently confronted by Alabama state troopers and local law enforcement. The brutal attack shocked the nation and awakened the conscience of the world. Images of the violence spread across television screens and newspapers, helping galvanize public support for the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant civil rights laws in American history.

Since that time, Selma has stood not only as a place of remembrance but also as a call to action. Each year, the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee commemorates the courage and sacrifice of those who marched, reminding future generations that the rights secured in 1965 must continue to be protected, strengthened, and passed forward.

For Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the commitment to leadership, service, and uplift has always included the responsibility to guide and mentor young men. The Fraternity's cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift compel its members to invest in the next generation and ensure that the history, lessons, and responsibilities of civic engagement are never forgotten.

It is in that spirit that Meet Me at the Bridge was established.

Conceived through the vision of Brother Barrington Dames, this initiative was created to intentionally bring together young men, mentors, and community leaders during Jubilee weekend for a shared experience rooted in history, mentorship, and purpose. The program provides mentees the opportunity to walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge alongside fraternity brothers and mentors, reflecting on the sacrifices made in Selma while encouraging them to carry forward the work of leadership, service, and civic responsibility.

Since 2024, the Omega Chi Chapter, in partnership with the Alabama Statewide Organization (ASO) and the ASO Fatherhood and Mentoring Committee, has successfully continued this pilgrimage. Each year, young men gather not simply to cross a bridge, but to walk in the footsteps of those who fought for justice and to be reminded that they too have a role to play in shaping the future.

Meet Me at the Bridge stands as both remembrance and responsibility. It is a living commitment to mentorship, leadership, and the continued pursuit of justice for generations to com
